Donít Open This Box
Adapted and written by Jeremy Bossom
Based on the gospel tract ďDonít Open This CardĒ by Ron Wheeler
[simple static set up - Props Ė a wrapped box sitting on a stool down front, center stage]†
[more visual set-up Ė Props Ė A bigger wrapped box that someone can fit comfortably in to come out of once the box is opened.† Designing it to exit in the rear without climbing out of it Ė walk out the back]
Jack (Jill) Ė Jack stumbles upon a box that is enticing and looks like he should open it.† After an extremely short deliberation, on whether to open or not open the box, he opens it - the resulting effect Ė disobedience and sin.
Will (Mary) Ė Is the voice, and friend, that tells Jack not to open it.† Once opened Will explains what just happened.
Start of Skit
Will: (Whispers) Donít open this box.
(Repeats while Jack comes up and debates not opening the box)
Will: OH NO!! Now you did it!!
Jack: Will, I should have known!† Only youíre crazy enough to sit around and figure out ways to play with my mind.† Seriously, what are you doing?
Will: You werenít supposed to open the box!
Jack: Sorry.† So whatís it all mean?† No wait, maybe I donít even want to know!?
Will: It means You disobeyed the instructions!
Jack: AndÖ??? Like itís a big deal?
Will: Itís just that disobeying the rules is EVERYWHERE!! †Even on a small scale like opening this box.† In fact, disobedience is a trait that characterizes ALL PEOPLE.
Jack: Seriously, itís just a box.† Iím not that bad just for opening some stupid box am I?† Right?
[slow and questioning]† Will: Oh, No??
Jack: Hye, I do lots of good things.† Iím sure that all my good outweighs my bad.
Will: So your saying you think that your good outweighs the bad youíve done, so that makes you acceptable to God, huh?
Jack: Well, I guess.† I mean, Iím a good person.
Will: According to the Bible, Godís requirement is perfection.† ďBe perfect, therefore, as your Heavenly Father is perfect.Ē Matthew 5:48
Jack: Perfection?!?!† But NOBODY is perfect!
Will: Oh, No?† Jesus, Godís Son is.† ďGod made Him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God.Ē 2 Corinthians 5:21
Jack: But Iíve never done anything ďmajorĒ that was wrong.† Seriously my sin is no greater than opening this box and thatís nothing!.
Will: In your eyes maybe, but not Godís.† ďFor whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles at just one point is guilty of breaking all of it.Ē James 2:10
Jack: What?! So youíre saying that just because I opened the box, even though I was told not to, that Iím going to hell?† That anyone who disobeys God or His Word is guilty of the same?
Will: Iím saying that no matter how big or small our sins, myself included, we all fall short of Godís perfect standard. ďAll have sinned and fall short of the glory of GodĒ Romans 3:23
Jack: So God wonít even consider the good that weíve done?
Will: So youíre asking God to grade on a curve?† Not a chance.† Jesus got a 100%, so either way, youíre failing this test.† Even if he did, then where would the cutoff point be?† Let me guess, youíd say the ladder rung just below where you are?
Jack: Well, Thatís what I was hoping.
Will: Godís not that subjective.
Jack: Then there is no hope!!!† Weíre all doomed!!!
Will: Ahhhh!... The answer is already found in who I told you about earlier.† Itís Jesus, Godís son.† He willing died on the cross to pay for our disobedience.† He took our punishment!† †Weíre are made perfect in Godís sight!
Hebrews 10:10, 14, & 17† And by that will, we have been made holy through the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.† 14† because by one sacrifice he has made perfect forever those who are being made holy.† 17† Then he adds: "Their sins and lawless acts I will remember no more."
Jack: I get it now! God can see us perfect now because of Christ!† Is that all?
Will: One more thing.† We need to receive this message and place our total trust in Christ.† He died for you and then rose from the grave to give you eternal life.
†ďGod, thank You for sending Your Son Jesus to die on the cross for my sins.† I now place my total trust in Christ to save me from my sin and give me eternal life. Amen.Ē
